Depending on whether you’re applying for medical or academic transcription, these are the criteria:

For Medical Transcriber Roles:

  1. Significant experience: at least 10 years of medical transcription.
  2. Experience working in hospital settings: at least 3 years in hospital environments, so you’re familiar with various specialties (operative reports, clinic notes, history & physical, multi-specialty clinics, etc.).
  3. Medical terminology knowledge: either through an accredited community college transcription program or equivalent hands-on knowledge.
  4. References: You need three references with current phone numbers; they must be from supervisors/owners, not coworkers.

For Academic Transcriber Roles:

What They Offer — Benefits & Work Style

If you qualify, here’s what MD to MD provides:

  • Flexible work hours: you can work part-time or full-time, making your own schedule as long as you meet turnaround/due date requirements.
  • Remote work: you do the work from your home office.
  • Support: Technical assistance is available when needed; they provide constructive feedback via QA (quality assurance) editors to help you improve.
  • Account continuity: they try to assign transcriptionists “primary/secondary accounts” so you can become familiar with specific dictators’ speech patterns, which helps productivity and consistency.
  • Earnings based on production: pay may be based on line count, character count, or audio length, depending on which account you work on. They provide real-time visibility into your production (so you know where you stand).

  • Opportunities exist for career growth (proofreading, editing, administrative roles).
  • They expect transcribers to be detail-oriented, self-starters, and organized.
