Transcriptionists (Independent Contractors)

Duties & Type of Work

  • You’ll work from home as a freelance transcriptionist, converting audio, video, typed, or handwritten materials into text.
  • Content is varied: oral history interviews (WWII veterans, women in academia, etc.), focus groups, tech webinars, commencement addresses, NGO work, educational reform, health-care access, and occasionally TV-show material. They do not do medical transcription.

Requirements & Skills

  • Must be fast and accurate typist; minimum typing speed ~80 WPM.
  • Able to return an hour-long file transcript within 24 hours.
  • Strong skills in language, style & punctuation; willingness to adhere to in-house style manuals and project-specific instructions.
  • Ability to research names and terms via internet. Transcripts become part of historical record so quality is important.

Equipment & Other Conditions

  • Reliable internet connection is required.
  • Need a unique email address not shared by others (confidentiality reason).
  • Transcripts submitted as .doc files; Word is preferred but compatible alternatives (Open Office etc.) acceptable if .doc format and formatting are correct.
  • Good headphones recommended; foot pedals or hotkeys for controlling audio are encouraged.

Application Process

  • Application requires: resume, cover letter, screenshot of a 3-minute typing test from typingtest.com showing at least 80 WPM and ~98% accuracy.
  • That’s before being considered for actual transcription tasks.
